SCANOSS is excited to announce its integration with the AI-powered Eclipse Theia IDE, bringing transparent license compliance and open source risk management directly into the developer workflow. This integration enables developers to scan AI-generated and manually written code against an extensive database of known open source software.

As part of this collaboration, SCANOSS seamlessly integrates with Theia’s intelligent development environment, allowing developers to automatically analyse AI-generated code for similarities with existing open source projects, identify the origins of detected code and its associated licensing terms to make informed decisions.
"With AI-generated code becoming a standard part of development, making sure it's used responsibly is more important than ever," said Julian Coccia, CTO at SCANOSS. "By integrating with Theia, we provide developers with the tools to easily check where their code comes from and what licenses apply, so they can build with confidence and stay compliant."
One of the key concerns is that large language models (LLMs) are often trained on publicly available code, which may lead to the generation of output that is substantially similar or functionally equivalent to pre-existing open source software. If an AI-generated snippet constitutes a derivative work or an exact reproduction of code under a restrictive license—such as the GPL—developers must adhere to the license's obligations, failing to do so could result in licensing violations, even if the match was unintentional.
SCANOSS addresses this challenge by providing real-time code analysis. For example, if Theia Coder generates a code snippet that closely resembles an existing project under a specific license, SCANOSS will highlight the match, allowing the developer to investigate further before integrating the code.
The SCANOSS integration in Theia is open source and free to use, with rate limits only for extreme high-usage scenarios. For professional environments requiring enhanced scanning capabilities, SCANOSS offers enterprise solutions with extended service levels and additional features such as security vulnerability detection and geographical provenance analysis.
